What should I expect to happen when my Zoom account switches from a HIPAA to a non-HIPAA account?
Once your Zoom account has been moved to the non-HIPAA main account, you will need to log out of Zoom, and back in using SSO. In a web browser, navigate to UNC Zoom site and sign-in using your Onyen credentials.
A notice will appear for the Zoom account change. Click “Switch to the New Account”.
On the next screen, select “I acknowledge and Switch”.
This generates an email, please check your email and follow the instructions by clicking to switch to the new account.
If you do not see the email, check your spam or Focus folders, or follow the instructions to go back and try over again. The email should come from
no-reply@zoom.us.
A new browser tab should open after clicking through the email. Click “I acknowledge and switch”.
The next screen should show success with the new account you are now a member of.
Click “sign in now” to sign in to your zoom account in your new account.
Your current settings, meetings, recordings, webinars, and scheduling permissions will move with your account. Most but not all meeting and webinar reports will also be moved. If you need assistance with report recovery after your account is moved, you should submit a help request.

UNC HIPAA requirements in Zoom include:
- Passcodes for joining all meetings and webinars, including by phone.
- Signing in to view cloud recordings.
- No livestreaming of meetings and webinars outside of Zoom (e.g., not on YouTube or Facebook).
The HIPAA sub-account:
- Does not automatically back up recordings of hosted meetings and webinars to Panopto. You must manually upload recordings that contain no PHI into Panopto.
- Cannot be integrated with the Canvas Learning Management System. The Zoom Pro tool will not work in your Canvas sites. You must access your Zoom meetings and recordings directly through UNC Zoom site and re-share your Zoom meeting join links with your students. Recordings can be accessed through Panopto in your Canvas course.
- Allows use of the following Zoom Apps approved for HIPAA use: Microsoft Outlook, Calendar, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Zoom Timer.
- Uses Zoom’s data centers located only in the United States for meetings, webinars, and recordings.
