This article outlines the New User Permissions for UNC Dataverse.
Overview
Effective November 1, 2022, UNC Dataverse has updated its user policy. Only UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, students, staff, and approved affiliates are now permitted to create new sub-dataverses and share data within UNC Dataverse.
This change aims to promote UNC-based research initiatives and ensure a more secure user experience for the research community.
New User Permissions
UNC SSO Shibboleth Users
UNC Single Sign On (SSO) Shibboleth users include faculty, students, or staff of UNC Chapel Hill who log in with their ONYEN credentials. They have permission to:
- Create new dataverses within UNC Dataverse.
- Share their data within those dataverses.
Non-UNC SSO Shibboleth Users
Non-UNC SSO Shibboleth users are affiliates who log in using their institution’s Single Sign On (SSO) Shibboleth. They may:
- Contribute to pre-existing dataverses where they hold administrative privileges.
- Request access to contribute to another user's dataverse by clicking the dataverse's Contact link and requesting permissions from the dataverse administrator.
Non-UNC ORCID Users
Non-UNC ORCID users are affiliates who log in using their ORCID. They may:
- Contribute to pre-existing dataverses where they hold administrative privileges.
- Request access to contribute to another user's dataverse by clicking the dataverse's Contact link and requesting permissions from the dataverse administrator.
Local Users
Local users log in using a dataverse-specific username and password. If you had a local account before November 1, 2022, you:
- Retain access to any dataverses and datasets you own.
- May continue adding datasets to your existing dataverses.
OAuth Access Changes
Important: OAuth authentication has been disabled.
- If you previously accessed UNC Dataverse via Gmail or GitHub, you must convert your account to a Shibboleth account.
- If your institution does not support Shibboleth, consult the administrator of the dataverse you wish to contribute to.
