Body
This article describes how to prepare research data and materials for data sharing in UNC Dataverse.
In This Article:
Introduction
Research data sharing should support the integrity and transparency of your research. This checklist outlines tasks to be performed to ensure that any data shared adheres to funder and institutional data requirements, archival best practices, and supports the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability (i.e. FAIR) of your data.
UNC Dataverse is the designated, institutional catalog of all UNC research data assets. UNC researchers are required to share data in UNC Dataverse by either
Note: If you deposit data in UNC Dataverse, you are required to complete tasks in this checklist prior to publishing data.
Data Sharing Preparation Checklist
1. Review files. Conduct a thorough inspection of files in the project dataverse to ensure that data are present and have enough supporting documentation to enable reuse by others in your field.
- Data file or link to external data location
-
Documentation provides sufficient information about the data, its structure, and/or methods to facilitate reuse of these data.
-
Compare the data structure and documentation to ensure the understandability of these data.
-
Data contain no personally identifiable, protected health, or sensitive information if you are depositing in UNC Dataverse. If you are depositing in another repository, please check their submission guidelines.
-
Data are not subject to a use agreement or license that prohibits sharing or redistribution.
2. Review metadata. Metadata is the information about your data that supports discovery and reuse of your project data. Ensure the project record(s) has metadata for at least data citation and description of research and data.
-
Confirm that you have completed all the metadata elements for a data citation such as Author, Contact, Title, Subject, Year, and Description in UNC Dataverse.
-
If your data are in an external location, include a catalog record in UNC Dataverse with the data citation, direct website link, DOI, or other persistent identifier along with repository name and any access instructions.
