RDMC UNC Dataverse: Glossary

This article is written to help researchers understand the words used in UNC Dataverse. Some of these words have multiple meanings, but we provide the word and definition used at UNC Dataverse here.  

Glossary

Catalog record is a detailed entry or listing for research data, including author, title, study information, data description, data location information, etc. metadata, but it does not include the data file. A catalog record is recommended when a researcher has deposited data in an external repository and needs to lists its location in UNC Dataverse. 

Data repository is an infrastructure for sharing, preserving, discovering, and maintaining access to research data assets. UNC Dataverse is an example of an institutional, multi-disciplinary data repository designed for UNC researchers and affiliates to discover, share, and maintain access to research data and materials.  

Dataset record is a detailed entry or listing for research data, including metadata like author, title, study information, data description, data location information, etc., along with data and documentation files. 

Metadata are the description of research data, data structure, research study, methods, instruments, and/or other information about your data. In UNC Dataverse, dataset and catalog records include a set of metadata fields where you can describe your research data.   

Project dataverse is a collection of data and research materials related to a project or research group. A project dataverse can contain dataset records, catalog records, and/or sub-project dataverses.
