Connecting to the UNC Wired Network

This article contains information for faculty, staff, and students on how to connect your devices to the UNC Wired Network.

macOS

Follow these instructions to connect  a macOS computer to the UNC Wired Network. If you need assistance with the instructions at any point in this document, contact the Service Desk

Step 1: Find Your Network Card's Hardware Address

To use the wired campus network, you'll need to register your Ethernet MAC Address.

  1. Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select System Settings. (You can also click the System Settings icon in the Dock).


     
  2. Under the System Settings, highlight "Network" in the left column to display the available Network Interfaces on the right.  Select the preferred Network Interface.
    (Note that this list of Network Interfaces will vary from system to system depending on the adapter type.)


     
  3. Click the Details button for the selected interface.


     
  4. Click on "Hardware" in the left column to display the hardware details of the Network Interface to the right.  Your Ethernet ID (MAC Address) is displayed on the top line.  Be sure to write this down EXACTLY as it appears on your screen.  This is your wired MAC Address.

 

Step 2: Registering Your Network Card(s) Hardware Address

Once you have obtained your Hardware Address or MAC Address you will to need to register them:

  1. Using a computer already connected to the Internet, visit Onyen Services.
  2. Choose the DHCP Registration link. You will need your Onyen, Onyen password and hardware address(es), to register your computer.

 

Step 3: Wired Configuration

If you have already registered your device, you just need to connect to the wired network.

  1. Click on the Apple menu in the top left corner of your screen and select System Settings. (You can also click the System Settings icon in the Dock).
  2. Under the System Settings, select Network in the left column.
  3. Choose Ethernet on the right and click Details.
  4. Select TCP/IP on the left.
  5. Configure IPv4 on the right: drop down menu choose Using DHCP (should be this by default).
  6. Once DHCP is set and the DHCP registration goes through, an IP address will automatically be assigned.

Your macOS device should be now connected to the network.

 

Windows

Follow these instructions to connect  a Windows computer to the UNC Wired Network. If you need assistance with the instructions at any point in this document, contact the Service Desk

Step 1: Finding Your Network Card's Hardware Address

  1. On your computer, click on the Windows Start Button.

     
  2. Type cmd in the search field and press Enter.

     
  3. In the new screen that appears, type ipconfig /all and press enter.

     
  4. You will see the Windows IP Configuration information. Your screen will be similar to this, but your numbers will be different.

     
  5. Write down the Physical Address under the Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection section (or Wireless LAN Adapter) exactly as it appears. In this example, 00-1F-3B-99-34-7D is the physical address for the Wireless Adapter and 00-1E-37-D4-CF-26 is the physical address for the Wired Ethernet Adapter.

 

step 2: Registering Your Network Card(s) Hardware Address

Once you have obtained your Hardware Address or MAC Address you will to need to register them:

  1. Using a computer already connected to the Internet, visit Onyen Services.
  2. Choose the DHCP Registration link. You will need your Onyen, Onyen password and hardware address(es), to register your computer.

Step 3: Wired Configuration

  1. On your computer, click on the Windows Start Button.

     
  2. Type network in the search field. Click Network status in the search results.

     
  3. Click on Change adapter options.

     
  4. To set up the Wired connection, right-click the Local Area Connection (or Ethernet) icon and choose Properties.

     
  5. Your Network window will look similar to the example below.
    Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). The IPv6 Protocol is not available on the UNC network and as a result, it may cause problems if it is enabled.

    Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.

     

  6. Make sure Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. Be sure to click the OK button after you finish.

     

Your device should be now connected to the network.

 

Gaming Devices

Registering Your Game System's Network Connection

To register your network card, you will need to obtain the network card’s hardware address (also known as the MAC address). The MAC address will be twelve characters comprised of the numbers 0 – 9 and the letters A – F, for example: 00-60-97-8E-1D-B9.

Once you have the MAC address, you will need to register it for DHCP by visiting the Onyen Services site and following the link for DHCP Registration.
