Domain options on Tarheels.live

Anyone with an Onyen can create a website on TarHeels.live network. All new sites will have “tarheels.live” as part of their web address (ex: tarheels.live/sitename). If you create a university-sponsored website on TarHeels.live, you may wish to request an alternative subdomain.

Information

About the TarHeels.live subdomain

Web addresses that end in “.edu” are designated for websites provided by accredited postsecondary institutions and meant to demonstrate credibility. The vast majority of websites on our self-service networks were created for coursework, class assignments, or CVs. The university has an enormous digital footprint. Website visitors should be able to easily distinguish between websites that represent the University in an official capacity (.edu) and sites created for a classroom assignment or personal use.

We chose the name TarHeels.live because this service is available to any Tar Heel with an active Onyen. All new sites will have “tarheels.live” as part of their web address (ex: tarheels.live/sitename) by default.

Alternative unc.edu subdomain options.

A small number of websites created on our self-service TarHeels.live network are for official university purposes. If you create a university-sponsored website on TarHeels.live, you may wish to request an alternative subdomain.

Top level subdomain (sitename.unc.edu)

A sitename.unc.edu subdomain represents the highest level in the UNC.EDU namespace and has substantial reputational implications for the University. The content on sitename.unc.edu sites directly represents the University and therefore the requirements to use one are rigorous. All unc.edu sites on the Tarheels.live network must use the WordPress UNC Heelium theme or an approved block editing theme like Twenty Twenty-Four. The site must be submitted to the Digital Accessibility Office for a review and site administrators must complete Digital Accessibility Training to be approved. See details regarding top level requirements and the request process.

Non-UNC Domains

In some unique situations owners might want a non-UNC domain such as a .org or .com. See requirements for non-unc domains.
