Onyen accounts can become disabled for several reasons. The most common is not changing your password at least once a year, which is a University requirement.
Information
Follow the steps below to change or reset your Onyen password. Please allow 30 minutes for your Onyen to fully reactivate. If you try to use your Onyen to access University applications (like UNC email, Sakai, and ConnectCarolina) before the 30 minutes is up, you may get a notice that you’re locked out.
- Log into your machine.
If you are on a University-owned non-Windows laptop or desktop, you should be able to login to your machine successfully using the local username and password. Then you can open a browser and continue with instructions below.
If you are on a University-owned Windows laptop or desktop, you may not be able to login to your machine successfully using your Onyen and previous password. This depends on whether you were connected to VPN when your password expired. If you cannot login to your machine, use a different device to open a browser and continue with instructions below. If you do not have another device, call 919-962-4357(HELP) for further assistance.
- Open a browser and go to onyen.unc.edu
- Select “Change or Reset Password”
- This will direct you to the Onyen Services site. From there, do one of the following:
- If you remember your previous password or can retrieve it from your browsers or device, click the “Change Password” tile
- If you don't remember your password and don't have it saved in any device or browser that you can get if from, click the or “Reset Lost or Forgotten Password” tile.
- If you are resetting your password, verify your identity through Duo using a previously configured device to confirm your authentication. If you haven't setup Duo or are locked out, please call 919-962-4357(HELP) for assistance.
- Follow the on-screen instructions for AlertCarolina, emergency contacts, and other information.
- Set a new password.
