CCI Lenovo Configuration - Windows

This article contains information for Faculty, Staff and Students on how to setup their new Lenovo computer when purchased through the Student Stores Tech Shop.

Intro

New CCI computers ship with a customized software configuration developed at UNC Chapel Hill. When a new computer is powered on for the first time it will present a series of menu options required to complete the setup process. This process can take an average of 10-15 minutes to complete.

Information

  1. Initial Setup

    1. Unbox, plug in, and power on computer
After unboxing your computer, plugging in the power adapter, and powering on the computer, you will be taken to this initial screen.

    2. Selecting your group
The first and most important menu choice is to select the type of user receiving the computer. This determines which software configuration to apply. Undergraduate students should select the first option and click Next.

    3. Choose Self-Service
Some menu options have a secondary choice. The Undergraduate Student menu option will allow for a Student Self Service and an Orientation Prep configuration. The Orientation Prep configuration is intended to be used by University ITS employees and is password protected. Undergraduate students should select “Student Self Service” and click Next.

    4. Select "Yes" and Click "Next"
Once the menu selections have been made a confirmation screen will appear. Select “Yes” and click Next.

    5. Let the configuration process run and select “Reboot” when prompted
The software configuration will run for about 10-30 minutes, rebooting several times. Do NOT power off, or "use" your computer until prompted with an option to “Reboot” or “Shutdown.” Select “Reboot” and click Continue where your computer will restart and allow you to set up your account. Setup must get through all 5 phases.

  2. Account Set Up

When the computer reboots it will enter the Windows Out of Box Experience. The process that follows will allow you to set Windows configuration options and create a local user account.

  1. Set a Username
Choose a memorable username for your computer like your onyen username and select “Next”.

  2. Create a password
Create a memorable password that you will be able to remember. We recommend creating a strong password to create your user account. Select “Next” after you have chosen your password. You will be prompted to type in your password again to confirm it. Choose “Next” again.

  3. Set up security questions for your account in case you forget your password
Set up memorable answers to the questions listed that only you would know the answers to.

  4. "Skip for now" the remaining prompts
After setting your security questions, your computer will prompt for a few device settings which you can adjust later. Select "Skip for now" or setup later to these configurations and customizations.  You can personalize these and many more options at anytime once your account has been created.  Your computer will create user account which may take a moment and automatically log you in.

  1. Final Steps

After your account has been set up, there are a few more steps to get your computer going all of the way, including installing updates for your system and for Windows and activating Office.

    1. Connect to Wi-Fi
Many of the following steps are dependent on being connected to Wi-Fi. Please connect your laptop to the internet before proceeding to the next steps.
    2. Activate Office
Open up any Microsoft Office program, for example Word, from the Start Menu by click on the Windows icon in the bottom left corner. It will initialize after a few moments and a window will open to prompt you to activate Office over the Internet. Select “Next” and confirm any additional prompts.

    3. Install Windows Updates
Open the Windows Start Menu and search for “Check for Updates” and open the application. Select “Check for Updates” and install all available updates for your computer. You may be prompted to restart your computer several times. Installing all updates is important for maintaining the security of your laptop.

    4. Install Lenovo System Updates
Lenovo regularly sends up Critical and Recommended updates specific to your device’s hardware. It best to install these immediately after setting up your computer to ensure all of the hardware components are functioning as intended.

      1. Open System Update
Open the Windows Start Menu and search “System Update” and open the application.

Select “Next.” It may take a few minutes until the next screen loads depending on how many updates are available for the model of your computer.

      2. Select applicable updates

Check the box for “Select all” in each tab for Critical updates, recommended updates. These will vary from computer to computer. You may also check the box for Optional updates as well. After selecting the necessary updates, select “Next” and your updates will begin to download on the next screen. Select “Download.”

      3. Download and install updates
