This article discusses how the use of no-reply or non-existent email addresses by departments at UNC creates email security challenges and results in email delivery issues.
UNC is aware that many departments are using anonymous email addresses to send mail. These email addresses use “no reply” or are non-existent email addresses. As security controls from Internet Service Providers become more restrictive, this will become a problem for the sender over time.
No-reply addresses – known issues at UNC
- No reply addresses decrease deliverability.
- No reply address can be flagged by email security tools as SPAM.
- No reply address can be blocked because it has reached its sending limit.
- Recipients often create rules for no-reply addresses to be routed to their junk folder or trash.

- No-reply address can impact email bounce backs.
Non-Existent email addresses
