This article explains how to create and convert LastPass Premium accounts to manage passwords. This service is available to all current UNC students, faculty, and staff.
LastPass helps you manage and remember numerous passwords safely, store encrypted files and notes, and share passwords securely. Additionally, LastPass Premium allows you to generate strong passwords for new accounts, store login information for frequently visited websites, and optionally save credit card information for quick online transactions. All sensitive data is encrypted locally on your device with a key that is never sent to or stored on LastPass servers.
Only you can decrypt the data you store in LastPass Premium using your LastPass password. The university cannot recover your data or passwords stored in LastPass.
Before You Begin
You are required to read these best practice guidelines to ensure the security of your LastPass Premium account..
- If you choose to store your Onyen in LastPass Premium, ensure you follow University policy on passphrase complexity when setting your LastPass password.
- Do not store University business information in LastPass Premium. It is intended for your personal credentials and notes, such as Netflix account information, cellular service details, or Gmail account passphrases.
- Your computer and other devices should have strong administrator passwords before accessing LastPass on them.
- LastPass accounts are not protected resources so they will not be protected by UNC 2-Step Login (Duo). Consider installing multifactor authentication offered by LastPass.
- Set up a "timeout" feature to automatically log out of your account if it is inactive for a specific amount of time. To change the timeout duration, click on the browser extension icon, go to Preferences and then Security.

If you do not complete the attestation, your account will revert to a free account. You can still access your vault after you leave the University.
