Sending Email Without SMTP Authentication

Tags Email SMTP

This article provides instructions for sending email through relay.unc.edu. Most of these messages are sent by automated programs and mail servers.

Email automatically generated through servers, workstations or printer/scanner/fax machines can be sent through UNC’s email system without requiring SMTP authentication. All machines which send email through the campus sub-net ranges (except for UNC Guest access) will be able to relay through this service, i.e. the need to register machines on the relay.unc.edu whitelist is not required.

Information

To use relay.unc.edu, the following settings must be configured:

  • Outgoing mail server name: relay.unc.edu
  • SMTP server port: 25
  • SMTP authentication: Do NOT enable

Properties of the relay.unc.edu service:

  • This mail stream is scanned for spam and viruses.
  • User and machine mail streams are separated so that machine mail reputation rankings and blacklisting do not affect delivery of user email and vice versa.
  • Messages destined for UNC addresses arrive faster via a dedicated Exchange connector.
  • Messages destined for non-UNC addresses route through DNS as usual.
