This article describes how to log into the Zoom Meeting Client with the UNC SSO (single-sign-on), and how to ensure you remain logged in to your licensed account.
Members of the campus community are encouraged to utilize the
Licensed Zoom accounts, which are available to them at no cost. Non-University Zoom accounts may offer fewer features and benefits compared to the University-affiliated Zoom account.

Log In Instructions
- If you do not have the Zoom Meeting Client software installed, visit the UNC Zoom site and click Download Client at the bottom of the page.
- Once the Zoom Meeting Client is installed, open the client.
- Click Sign In.
- Click Sign In with SSO. (Note: SSO stands for Single Sign On.)
- Enter unc as the company domain when prompted. Click Continue.
- You will be redirected to the UNC SSO page. Login using your Onyen and Onyen password. If prompted by your browser, click to allow the browser to open Zoom.
Checking to make sure you’re using your licensed account
- You can always make sure you’re using the correct account by clicking your avatar picture or initials in the upper right of the desktop application or zoom.unc.us (or pressing the settings icon on your mobile device) where you should see your name, onyen@email.unc.edu email address (with this exact cadence; see below.) Users on the web client or some older versions of the desktop application may also see an orange and blue LICENSED icon.
A few common signs that indicate you're not using your authenticated account
- Seeing a UNC email other than an address with the exact cadence of onyen@email.unc.edu. Please note that Zoom will treat email addresses such as alias@unc.edu, onyen@ad.unc.edu, onyen@live.unc.edu, and email addresses affiliated with professional schools (e.g. onyen@sph.unc.edu, onyen@med.unc.edu, etc.) as different Zoom accounts.
- Seeing a Yahoo, Gmail, or other non-UNC email address.
- Seeing the word BASIC next to your name.
- Inability to host a meeting with more than 100 participants.
- Inability to record to the cloud.
- Hosted meetings being limited to 40 minutes in length.
- Inability to see previously scheduled meetings in your upcoming meetings schedule.
- Being designated only as a participant, rather than host, in meetings which you have scheduled.
- Inability to join meetings which require UNC authentication.
- Not being automatically sorted to a pre-assigned breakout room.
If you experience any of these issues, log out of Zoom, and then follow the steps listed above (starting at step #3) to login to your licensed account.
