A VoIP “soft client,” or a “softphone” (short for software telephone), is an application that enables users to make calls from their computer using a VoIP service. The Teams mobile app call feature, for example, acts like a softphone. Google Voice and Skype are other examples of softphone applications. 

Information

The AT&T branded name for its soft client is Communicator. 

 

COMMUNICATOR

  • Basic – This version is included with a new VoIP phone line.
    • There is no additional monthly cost.
    • There is no additional cost to UNC.
  • Premium – This version is optional and is therefore only provided when requested
    • There is no additional monthly cost.
    • There is an additional cost to UNC per subscription.
    • Available as follows:
      • Desktop.
      • Mobile.
        • Compatible with iOS and Android.

BASIC COMMUNICATOR:

  • WORKS ONLY WHEN THE “REMOTE OFFICE” FEATURE IS ACTIVATED.
  • You must configure the “Remote Office” feature with a remote office phone number (cell phone or land-line number), and enable the feature, prior to making or receiving phone calls.
    • The “Remote Office” feature can be configured under “Options” and “Incoming Calls” in the Communicator application.
    • The “Remote Office” feature can be enabled:
      • By selecting “Calls” and “Remote Office”.
      • By selecting “Options” and “Incoming Calls”.
    • It is important to note that the Basic version of the application requires another phone for call handling and audio.
  • The user will receive inbound calls to the phone number input in the Remote Office configuration (cell phone or land line).
  • The user can make outbound calls using the Communicator application on their PC / MAC.
    • Enter the phone number to be dialed on the desktop application’s dialpad.
    • Select enter on your computer’s keypad, or,
    • Select the “Call from another Device” icon at the bottom of the application.
      • The user’s cell or land-line “remote office” phone will ring. Once answered, the phone system will initiate a call to the destination number, creating a 3-way conference call.  
    • The outbound Caller ID phone number (what the person being called will see) from this call will be the office phone number.
  • Inbound calls, if not answered, will forward to the office voicemail box.
  • Directory Options:
    • Enterprise – phone system directory.
    • Personal.

Basic Quick Reference Guide

PREMIUM COMMUNICATOR:

  • You can receive inbound calls directly to your PC / MAC or mobile device.
  • You can make outbound calls using the Communicator client on your PC / MAC. 
    • The Remote office feature is not required.
  • The user has the option to user the PC / MAC integrated speakers & Mic or use an external speaker or USB headset.
    • Be sure to setup audio appropriately in the application.
      • Go to “Options” and “Audio/Video”.
  • Video calling is supported.
  • Chat – between other Communicator clients – is supported.
  • Directory Options:
    • Enterprise – phone system directory.
    • Personal.
    • Outlook Contacts.
  • Availability is provided as an integration with outlook calendar.
    • This can be manually changed within the application.
  • The outbound Caller ID phone number (what the person being called will see will be the office phone number.
  • This Premium version is also available as a Mobile Client for iOS or Android.

When upgrading to PREMIUM, you must indicate whether you want access to desktop or mobile, or both. Note that additional charges apply to subscribe to both PREMIUM Desktop and Mobile.

Downloading and Installing the Communicator Software to a PC (Windows)

Follow the steps below to download and install the Communicator software to a PC with Windows.
Note: The Communicator software can’t be installed on Linux devices.

  1.  Download the appropriate version of Communicator. Click the link below:
               For Premium Desktop Communicator
               For Basic Desktop Communicator
  2. After you have downloaded the setup files, the system displays a popup asking if you want to open the executable file.
  3. Click Yes to start installing the software.
  4. On the Communicator Setup screen, click Next.
  5. On the License Agreement screen, click I Agree.
  6. On the Install Options screen, click Next.
    • Important:  You see several Install Options. Do not make changes to these selections.
    • Do not select “Install Communicator’s Outlook Plug-In”.
    • On the Choose Install Location screen, be sure the destination folder is set to download to your computer (it will start with a C:\) and click Next.
    • Note: If you don’t have admin rights on your computer, you can point the path to C:\Users\Public\Mitel\Communicator or C:\Users\username\Documents\Mitel\Communicator. If neither of these paths work, contact your departmental IT staff.
    • Important: Make sure that your download location isn’t set to an online location such as storage.unc.edu.
  7. On the Choose Start Menu Folder screen, click Install.
    • Important: Do not make any changes.
  8. In the Installation Complete window, click Next.
  9. In the Completing the Communicator Setup window, click Finish to complete the application download.
  10. In the End User License Agreement window, click I Agree to confirm you understand not to use this product to make 911 emergency calls.
    Result: The system displays the Mitel Clearspan Communicator sign in screen. Open the toggle below for step-by-step instructions for signing in.

 

Signing in to the Communicator

After you have installed the Communicator software on your computer, complete the following steps to login.

  1. In the Server Address field, do one of the following:
    • If you have the Basic software, enter: https://pub2-xs.hvs.att.com/dms/bc/dt/config.xml
    • If you have the Premium software, enter: https://pub2-xs.hvs.att.com
  2. In the Enterprise Email field, enter None, and then click Continue.
  3. In the User Name and Password fields, enter the user name and password that you received in the Welcome email from ITS Voice Services. If you have already updated your password, use the updated password. 
    Note: To ensure accuracy, it’s best to copy and paste your password from the email into the password field if inserting the password sent to you from Voice Services.
  4. In the Default Calling Application pop-up, click Yes to indicate that you want Communicator to be the default calling application.
  5. In the Outlook integration pop-up, click Yes or No depending on whether you want to allow the Communicator software to have access to your Outlook contacts.
    Result: Your Communicator software is now ready to make and receive calls. For instructions on using the Communicator, go to the Using the Communicator page.

 

Downloading and Installing the Communicator Software on a Mac

Follow the steps below to download and install the Communicator software on your Mac computer.

  1. Download the appropriate version of Communicator for Mac. Click the link below:
               For Premium Desktop Communicator
               For Basic Desktop Communicator
  2. After you have downloaded the setup files, open the dmg file from your download folder.
  3. Drag the Communicator icon to the shortcut to Applications folder to install the software.
  4. Open the Communicator software from the Applications folder.
    Result: You will get an error message that Apple can’t check for malicious software the first time you try to open the Communicator software.
  5. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General to change your security settings.  Click the Open Anyway button.
  6. In the popup asking if you want to open the file, click the Open button.
  7. In the End User License Agreement window, click I Agree to confirm you understand not to use this product to make 911 emergency calls.
    Result: The system displays the Mitel Clearspan Communicator sign in screen. Open the toggle below for step-by-step instructions for signing in.
  8. See above for how to sign in.

For Communicator Mobile Client, look for UC-One Connect Evaluation, and download from:

Communicator Basic is assigned to ALL VoIP phone lines.

Communicator Premium – desktop and/or mobile - is optional and assigned only if requested as an update to the Basic version

When logging in to the Communicator, you are prompted to enter a Username.

The Username is the 10-digit phone number followed by @ad.unc.edu with no spaces.

  • Example: 919XXXXXXX@ad.unc.edu
