Office 365: SharePoint

This article provides details regarding SharePoint.   SharePoint is one of the applications offered as part of the Microsoft Office 365 Collaboration Suite. The service is available for faculty, staff, and students.

Accessing SharePoint

  • To login to SharePoint go to Office Online and click on the Waffle icon (upper left) then on SharePoint. Or if you know the name of the SharePoint site you are trying to access you can go to "https://adminliveunc.sharepoint.com/sites/<site name>" by replacing <site name> with the name in question. 
  • You will see the  Microsoft log-in site.
  • For the  username, please enter your " onyen@ad.unc.edu" address and select Next.
  • For the password, please enter  your onyen password, then click on  Sign In.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a brand new SharePoint Site?

Office 365 allows users to create a SharePoint site.  These will be created with an Office 365 Group associated with the site.  To do this please do the following:

  1. Go to office.unc.edu then log in.
  2. Click on SharePoint
  3. Click on Create button.  
  4. Enter the information prompted.

In order to obtain a brand new SharePoint Only site (No office 365 group associated) please contact the ITS Service Desk by submitting a Service Request.


What is the URL for my SharePoint site?

Each site’s URL is as follows ‘https://adminliveunc.sharepoint.com/sites/depts/site_name‘ or   ‘https://adminliveunc.sharepoint.com/sites/site_name‘.

How can I add external users to my SharePoint?

By default all new SharePoint sites created have external sharing turned on.  To add external users you will need to add them as members please visit the Microsoft Article Adding guests to office 365 groups.


Can I restrict access to the documents folder in SharePoint?

Yes, you can restrict access and provide unique permissions with either SharePoint/Office 365 Group or SharePoint Only site.  In these cases, a SharePoint site is typically used as the Office 365 group sets up more of collaboration access.  Please visit this Microsoft Articles Customize permissions for a SharePoint List or Library and Sharing SharePoint folder items with unique permissions.
