Office 365: Outlook Online

This article covers the basic features offered through Outlook Online. You may access Outlook Online by visiting UNC's Heelmail website or going to the Office website then selecting the Outlook icon.

Before You Begin

  1. Go to UNC Self Service site.
  2. Log in with your Onyen and password.
  3. Click on Email Sign-up. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Once your account is created, Office 365 offers the users the ability to access their email through Outlook Online or Desktop/Mobile clients.

Accessing Outlook Online

  • You can access Outlook Online by going to the main UNC Office 365 website and then selecting the Outlook Icon on the right hand side of the screen. 
  • You can also access Outlook Online directly by going to UNC Heelmail site.

 

Logging In

  • To access your Office 365 account, you will need to sign in with your onyen@ad.unc.edu as your username and your Onyen password.
  • If you do not know your Onyen or Onyen password you can look up your Onyen or reset your password at the Onyen Services site.

 

Accessing your Mail

  • Upon logging into Outlook Online, your Office365 email inbox is displayed and the available folders within your account are presented within the menu on the left of the screen. The horizontal menu bar, above the listed messages, presents the available options for working with your messages.
  • Within Outlook Online you may:
    • Check messages
    • Compose a new message
    • Move, delete, recover deleted messages
    • Mark messages as read and unread
    • Note: The checkbox next to the message(s) that are to be manipulated must be checked.

 

Recovering Deleted Items

  • To recover deleted items click on the Deleted Items folder.  Click on Recover items deleted from this folder located at the top of list of deleted items, this will allow you to recover the items that have been deleted. These items will be available for 30 days.

 

Accessing your Calendar

  • Clicking on the Calendar icon on the left hand side menu will open your Outlook Calendar. From here you can create events or see what events you have been invited to.
    • Adding a New Event by default, only schedules time on your personal calendar. You may add attendees to the event (appointment or meeting) by clicking on the Invite required or option attendees fields.
    • You may add a Teams meeting to your meeting invite by selecting to toggle switch next to Teams meeting next to Search for a room or location.

    • You can add a physical location to your meeting by using the Room Finder feature by selecting Search for a room or location.  Alternatively you can add a Room from the address book by selecting Invite required attendees. 

    • Within the currently available options, the only distinction between Appointments and a Meeting Request is the inclusion of attendees. Adding attendees to an appointment turns the appointment into a meeting.

Accessing your Contacts

  • Clicking on the People icon on the left hand side menu will open your Outlook Contacts.
    • Upon selecting People, your Office365 contacts will be displayed and the available contact lists within your account are presented within the menu on the left of the screen. The horizontal menu bar, above your contacts, presents the available options for working with your contacts.  You can create new contacts or contact lists, as well as edit or delete existing contacts and lists.
    • Included in the menu on the left you will see the University's Global Address List as well as specifically curated lists under Directory.

 

Accessing your Groups

  • Clicking on the Groups icon on the left hand side menu will open your Office 365 Groups.
    • Groups are useful when working with or communicating with groups of people.
    • Both UNC as well as non UNC members can be added to groups.
    • Groups contain a group mailbox as well as calendar that all members can access and send to.

Other useful features

  • Clicking on the To Do icon on the left hand side menu will open your Office 365 Tasks menu.
    • Tasks are a way to organize your email and make certain email requests stand out as important emails. Tasks allow you to categorize emails by colors.
  • Clicking on the Settings icon on the upper right menu will open your Outlook Online Settings menu.
    • Settings allow you to change default behavior of Outlook Online additional helpful details can be found at Mail settings.
