Office 365 Email Setup: Android Outlook App

This article walks you through how to setup your UNC Outlook email on Android Operating System.

Before You Begin

Microsoft has improved security in Office 365 by turning off legacy protocols that do not support the latest security technology.  These changes include retiring the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 protocols and disallowing authentication from applications that do not support multi-factor authentication (MFA).  This will cause devices or applications that do not support (or are not configured to use) the latest technology to stop working that are using older versions of TLS.

The Android Native Email application may or may not support modern authentication or multi-factor authentication (MFA). Please visit your Android device manufacturer for details on the native mail client and whether or not it supported.  The Outlook App on Android does support modern authentication or multi-factor authentication (MFA).

The directions listed below are specific for the Outlook app on the Android OS.  You will need to have the app installed before you can follow the directions listed bellow.  You can download a copy of the Outlook app for Android at the Google Play store

New Email Setup In the Outlook app

Step 1:

Open the Outlook app.

Once you open the Outlook app you should see the welcome to Outlook Screen.

Make sure to select Add Account and not Create New Account.

Step 2:

Depending on if this if the first time you have used your Onyen@ad.unc.edu account on your Android device, you will either see a screen for Accounts Found or Add Account.

  1. If you see your Onyen@ad.unc.edu account listed you can select it and hit Continue, then proceed to login following the next step.
  2. If you see add account, please enter your Onyen@ad.unc.edu email address where it asks you to Enter your email and hit continue to login following the next step.

Step 3:

Once you have selected or entered your Onyen@ad.unc.edu account and hit continue you should be taken to the UNC login page.  Here you will be prompted to enter a password, this will be your Onyen password.  If you do not know your Onyen password or need to reset it, you can do so at the Onyen Services Page.

Once you have entered your password and hit Sign in, you will be prompted to authenticate using the Microsoft 2 factor app.  It should ask you to verify using whichever method you have set as your default, but if you need to change the method of verification you can select Sign in another way.

Step 4:

Once signed in you will be directed to Activate device administrator.

For Outlook to work you must select Activate, and then Activate this device admin app.

Step 5:

Once you have accepted the permissions for the Outlook app you are almost done.  Outlook will ask if you want to add another account.  If you wish to add another account you will need to follow the directions provided by the provider of the Email account in question.

If you have no other accounts to add, select Maybe Later and your email should load.  You will also see a window asking you in you would like to Enable Notifications for Outlook, this choice will not affect the application's ability to access your email.

With that your account has been added and you can access your UNC email!
